Picadillo with Ground Turkey

Picadillo Dish in an All-Clad Saute pan

Picadillo, also called “Giniling” is a delicious one pot meal. Traditionally made with ground beef, potatoes, carrots and peas, this easy recipe is a family favorite.

Picadillo Recipe!

The traditional Picadillo recipe calls for ground beef but I didn’t have any on hand so I used ground turkey. I was quite pleased with the result as it is a healthier alternative (much less oil and fat) and great for those who are on a “no red meat” diet.

It takes only 15 minutes of prep and 20 minutes of cooking time and it’s a one-pot meal which I love. Especially on nights where things are a bit hectic at home, it makes me feel comforted in knowing I only have one pot to cook! Who else can relate?

Serve Picadillo with plain white Jasmine rice, a fried egg and a drizzle of Sriracha on top! Yum!

This is a great make ahead meal as it holds up well in an air tight container to freeze for later. You can freeze this for up to 1-2 months. When you’re ready to eat, simply defrost it and heat tit up in the microwave.

How To Make Picadillo

  1. Prep all the vegetables: peel and dice the carrots and potatoes, dice the onion and mince the garlic. Set it aside.
  2. In a large sauté pan like the one used from All-Clad, heat up the cooking oil on medium heat.
  3. Add the minced garlic and diced onions and sauté until the onions are soft and translucent.
  4. Add the ground turkey and cook until it’s no longer pink. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Add the water, tomato sauce and soy sauce. Mix well.
  6. Cover and let this simmer for a few minutes.
  7. Add the carrot and potatoes and mix. Cook with the lid on until the vegetables are softer but not mushy.
  8. Remove the lid, add the peas and mix.
  9. Turn off the heat and let stand for about 5 more minutes. Just enough to cook the peas but not turn them into mush.
  10. Season with salt and pepper if you desire and gently mix.
  11. Serve with plain white rice.
  12. (Optional) Add a fried egg and a drizzle of Sriracha (or your hot sauce of preference).
